Cary Virtue is a Maui criminal defense lawyer whose legal practice is concentrated in the area of criminal defense. He has established a highly successful criminal defense trial practice focused primarily in the county of Maui, but has handled numerous cases throughout the state of Hawaii. Prior to entering private practice, Attorney Virtue was a senior staff Public Defender at Associated Counsel for the Accused, Seattle, Washington for 17 years. Practice centered on all crimes, but with 14 years experience handling felonies and many high-profile cases. Attorney Virtue was also a supervisor for the felony unit.
Attorney Virtue went to college at Reed College, Portland State University and received a doctorate of law from Northwestern school of law, at Lewis and Clark College, Portland, Oregon. He has trained to defend Death Penalty Cases attending Life In the Balance training seminars with the National Legal Aid and Defender Association. He has also had seminar training in federal court with the National Federal Public Defender seminars.
Attorney Virtue handles all types of state and federal criminal cases. He is experienced in handling all felonies and misdemeanors including drug possession and trafficking cases, computer and internet crimes, sex offenses, homicides, theft and burglary charges, assault and battery, DUI, domestic violence, gun possession, Grand Jury investigations and proceedings, post conviction relief matters, appeals, bond hearings, arraignments, sealing and expunction of records, administrative hearings and professional regulation matters.
Active member in good standing: Hawaii State Bar Association (HSBA# 8717 since 2007), and Washington State Bar Association (WSBA# 19100 since 1989).
Attorney Virtue is highly experienced in helping clients with mental health issues where it intersects with crimes, from the ability to understand the legal proceedings to mitigating their case with mental health defenses. Attorney Virtue has experience in a wide range of mental health issues, from bipolar manic depression to schizophrenia (hearing voices, delusions). In addition, he is strong in the area of drug and alcohol addictions. Including working defenses on major felonies, Attorney Virtue also helps clients through the Mental Health Court, the Maui Drug Court program, and the state Mental Health Hospital on Oahu, and in Federal Court.
